Downspout Repair in Hampstead, NH

Downspout repair in Hampstead, NH is usually a small job with a big effect on where your roof water ends up. We replace the crushed section, reseat the elbow or refasten the strap, then check that water lands well away from the foundation. One damaged piece rarely means a whole new downspout.

Find the fault by walking the downspout from the ground up, since most damage happens within reach of a snow shovel or a mower. This repair comes under our broader gutter repair service, and the four failures below cover most of what goes wrong with the pipe itself.

Which part of the downspout failed?

Name the failure first, because each one has its own fix. The price usually depends on the number of pieces and the height, not on the labor of figuring it out.

Signs a downspout is failing

Watch a storm from the porch. The gutter spills at the corner while the pipe stays dry, a stain runs down the wall, a puddle sits at the foundation or ice builds at the base in January. Any of these says water is not following the pipe.

Crushed downspout

A mower, snow blower, ladder or sliding roof snow can flatten the pipe. Even a partly crushed section narrows the path, which catches leaves and holds water that later freezes. The dent will not hammer back out properly. We replace the section.

Disconnected downspout

The pipe has slid out of the gutter outlet or apart at a joint, so water dumps down the wall. This often happens when the joints were never fastened, or when a shifted gutter pulled the top apart. We reseat the pieces and fasten each joint. Where the gutter moved, we fix that first.

Leaking elbow

Downspout elbow repair starts with finding out why it leaks. An elbow can crack from ice, come apart at the joint, or be fitted backward so water runs out instead of in. We reassemble it in the right order or fit a new one.

Loose downspout

A pipe that rattles or leans has lost its straps. Downspout strap replacement is simple, but the fasteners need something solid behind them. Hollow vinyl siding will not hold much, so we look for backing before driving a screw.

Where the water should land

A working downspout that empties at the wall has not solved anything. An inch of rain on 1,000 square feet of roof is about 620 gallons, and a single downspout may carry a good share of it to one spot beside your foundation.

BestPlaces records about 45.9 inches of precipitation a year in Hampstead. Rockingham County has also had federally declared flood disasters, in May 2006 and April 2007, when the Lamprey River flooded Raymond and nearby towns. That history is a good reason to check where each downspout empties, even on a house far from the river.

Grade decides the rest. On level lots like much of Plaistow, water tends to sit where it lands. On low wet lots in Fremont, discharge can matter as much as the gutter. If your downspout runs into a pipe in the ground, tell us. Any digging for a buried drain line needs Dig Safe first, and our underground drainage page explains what to ask.

Replace one section or the whole downspout?

Replace the piece when the damage is local. Replace the whole downspout when the damage repeats along its length.

What we find Usual fix What to weigh
One crushed or split section Swap that section New metal may look brighter than old
Cracked elbow at the top or bottom New elbow, fastened joints Worth checking the joint above for slippage
Several dents, splits or stripped straps Replace the full downspout A cleaner result, with more material
Pipe overwhelmed in heavy rain Larger pipe or an added drop A sizing job rather than a repair

If you are replacing it anyway, it is worth asking whether a larger size makes sense. Many older homes have 2x3 inch pipe, and 3x4 inch moves more water and clogs less easily. That falls under downspout installation, and we would price it next to the like-for-like option.

Rule out a clog before you pay for a repair

A blocked downspout can look like a broken one. Water backing up at the top, or leaking from a joint halfway down, can point to a clog and nothing else. In that case downspout cleaning is the right job, and our post on clearing a clogged downspout shows how to tell.

Water that never reaches the outlet is a different problem again. If the trough holds water near the top of the pipe, the run may need gutter pitch correction. And if a joint has been leaking down the wall for a while, press on the boards around it, since wet fascia and trim often comes along with a long-ignored leak.

Our downspout repair in Hampstead, in order

  1. We look at the outlet, every joint and every strap, top to bottom.
  2. We flush the pipe to confirm it runs clear.
  3. We remove the damaged section or elbow and check how the pipe meets the gutter.
  4. We fit the new piece with the upper end inside the lower, fasten the joints and strap the pipe to solid backing.
  5. We set or adjust the elbow and extension at the ground so water leaves the wall.
  6. We run water through it from the gutter and watch the discharge.

Included in that visit is a look at the outlet seal, since water spins hard through that joint. If you have snow sliding off onto this corner, we will point that out as well.

What sets the price of a downspout repair

We quote per job and in writing after a look at the downspout. The factors are straightforward:

  • How many sections, elbows and straps need replacing
  • Story height and ladder position
  • Pipe size and whether the color can be matched
  • Whether the gutter outlet or the seam around it needs work
  • Whether an extension or a new discharge point is part of the fix

One review sums up how we approach these. Jewell's says we looked past the quick patch and did not "put a band aid on it", on a job that began with rain reaching a rotting window. A repaired downspout that still drops water in the wrong place would be exactly that patch.

Aaron P. also praised our "Quality work" on repairs. We cover Hampstead, Raymond, Plaistow, Fremont and the towns between them.

Town rules, Dig Safe and where the water goes

We found no New Hampshire state gutter license, and permits are handled by each town. Ask the town whether a drainage change needs one, and whether it limits water directed toward a neighbor's lot or the road. Call Dig Safe before any digging for a buried drain line.

Why Lanes Gutters for downspout work

Reviews mention that we explain things clearly, keep the site clean and spot issues beyond what the customer knew about. On a downspout that means checking the gutter outlet and the ground end as well as the pipe. Written price first, always.

“We had a gutter put on to help divert rain from a rotting window. Company was responsive and came up with a solution to fix the entire problem rather than put a band aid on it.”

Downspout Repair: common questions

What causes a downspout to pull off the wall?

Failed straps are the usual cause. Screws loosen in siding, ice swells inside the pipe, and a clogged downspout full of water or ice gets heavy enough to tear its fasteners. Snow sliding off the roof can also hit the top elbow and knock it out of line. We refasten into solid backing and clear the blockage that caused it.

Can one crushed section be replaced?

Yes. Downspouts are built from straight sections and elbows, so a crushed length can be cut out and replaced without touching the rest. On a Hampstead house with an older faded finish, a new section may look brighter than the pipe beside it. We tell you that up front so you can decide whether to replace the full length.

Why does my downspout leak at the elbow?

Most elbow leaks come from a joint that has slipped, a crack from ice, or pieces fitted the wrong way round. The upper piece should sit inside the lower one so water stays in the pipe. A blockage below can also force water out of the joint, so we check that the run below is clear before refastening.

How far should a downspout extension run after a downspout repair?

A common target is about 4 to 6 feet away from the foundation, and farther if the ground slopes back toward the house. The right length depends on the grade and on what sits nearby, such as a walkway that could ice over in January. We look at where the water will travel before suggesting any extension.

Can a frozen downspout be repaired or does it need replacing?

It depends on whether the ice did damage. A frozen downspout that thaws without splitting may only need clearing. If ice has opened a seam or bulged an elbow, that piece gets replaced. Do not force a frozen pipe with a tool or hot water from a ladder. Call us once it is safe, and we will check each section.
