Downspout Cleaning in Hampstead, NH
A downspout that backs up is usually packed at an elbow, and most clogs clear with a top-down flush or by taking the elbow off. For downspout cleaning in Hampstead, NH, we find the blockage, clear it and run water through until it flows freely out the bottom.

A clear gutter does little good if the pipe below it is blocked. Downspout cleaning is one part of our gutter cleaning service in Hampstead, and this page covers the case where the gutter looks fine but the water still has nowhere to go.
Is your downspout backing up? Signs to check in the rain
A backed-up downspout spills over the gutter near the outlet while the rest of the run stays calm. That pattern separates it from a gutter that is too small, which tends to spill along its length in a hard storm.
Go outside in steady rain and look for:
- Water pouring over the gutter at the corner closest to the outlet
- A trickle, or nothing, from the bottom of the downspout
- Drips from the joints of an elbow partway down the wall
- A section that has bulged, split or pulled off its strap
- Washed-out mulch or soggy ground at one corner of the house
A clogged downspout full of water is also heavy. It pulls on its straps, and in a cold snap the water inside can freeze and split the metal.

What clogs downspouts on wooded Rockingham County lots
Bends cause most clogs. A typical downspout leaves the gutter through two elbows that step it back to the wall, and debris wads up at the first tight turn. Wet leaves start the plug. Pine needles and oak tassels knit it together, and shingle grit packs into the gaps.
The timing follows the trees. Oak tassels come down in late spring and leaves and needles in fall, so a downspout that ran fine in July can quit in November. Hampstead's 45.9 inches of yearly precipitation (BestPlaces) gives a slow outlet plenty of chances to show itself.
Long runs make it worse. SMACNA treats 50 feet as the practical maximum run for one downspout. On SMACNA-based sizing charts a 5-inch K-style gutter can serve about 5,520 square feet of roof in an inch of rain per hour, and all of that water has to leave through the outlets. When one narrows, the whole run backs up behind it.

Where we look before clearing anything
We start at the bottom and work up. Plenty of "clogged downspouts" are really a crushed extension, or an elbow that has slipped apart behind a shrub.
Next we check the outlet from the ladder, then feed water in from a hose and follow it. Where the water stops, or where it leaks out, tells us where the plug is. If the downspout runs into the ground, we find out whether it enters a buried drain or ends in a splash block, since that changes what we can reach.
We also look at why it clogged. If the gutter above is full, the downspout is only the symptom. Clearing it without clearing the run buys a storm or two.
Flush, take apart or replace?
Downspout flushing is the simplest fix, and it is not always the right one.
| Method | When it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Flush from the top | Loose debris and straight drops | Quick, but it can push a packed plug tighter |
| Take off the elbow | A plug wedged at a bend | More handling, and the joint must be refastened properly |
| Run a drain snake | A plug partway down a long drop | Slower, and it does not pass tight bends easily |
| Replace the section | Crushed, split or corroded metal | New metal, priced as a repair |
Pressure is the one tool to be careful with. A pressure washer on a downspout can drive a plug tighter or pop a joint apart, so we favor water at hose pressure and the elbow off over force. Light tapping along the wall of the pipe can also loosen a packed section before it is flushed.
If the metal is damaged, we will show you and price downspout repair separately. If one outlet keeps overloading because it serves too much roof, the real answer may be another downspout installation rather than more cleaning.

Downspout cleaning in Hampstead, NH, in order
- We check the bottom of the downspout, the extension and any straps.
- We clear the gutter around the outlet so nothing new drops in.
- We run water in and find where it stops.
- We clear the plug by flushing, by taking off the elbow or with a snake.
- We put the joints back together and fasten them.
- We run water again, watch it leave the bottom at full flow, point the discharge away from the house and show you what came out.
That last step is about being straight with you. Adenilton D. wrote that the crew "explained everything clearly," and J. B. called the work "Very efficient." If the clog turns out to be a symptom of something larger, we will say so.
How long it takes, and what you should see afterward
A single clog is a short job once we can reach it. The time goes up with height, with packed elbows and with the number of outlets on the house.
In the next rain you should see steady flow from the bottom and no spill at that corner. Water should land away from the foundation, and many homes do well with an extension that carries it several feet out. If the gutter still spills in a hard storm with a clear outlet, the cause is more likely size or pitch, and we would look at that next.

Why Lanes Gutters for a stubborn downspout
A downspout that keeps clogging is usually a symptom, and we look past it. Jewell had a gutter added to divert rain from a rotting window, and the review credits a fix for the whole problem, not "a band aid." Adenilton D. noted that we explained everything clearly. As of November 2026, Google lists us at 5.0 from 29 reviews. Our base is on Glenwood North Road, and the phone is answered Monday through Saturday from 8am to 6pm.
What changes the price of clearing a clog?
We quote downspout work per job once we have seen it, always in writing. Cost depends on reach as much as on the clog:
- Number of downspouts that need clearing
- Height of the outlet, and whether a second story is involved
- Whether joints must come apart or a section needs replacing
- Whether the gutters above need cleaning at the same visit
We have no third-party figure for downspout work alone. For a sense of scale, This Old House reports whole-house gutter cleaning at $100-$450 nationally in 2026. That is a national estimate for a different scope, and it is not our price.
Rules, permits and where roof water may go
Clearing a downspout needs no permit that we know of. Ask Hampstead's building office if the work goes beyond cleaning, since permits in New Hampshire are a local matter. No state gutter contractor license exists that we could find. Where water lands is a separate question: a town or HOA may limit discharge onto a road or a neighbor's lot, and a home on septic should aim it away from the tank and leach field. Digging for a buried drain line starts with a Dig Safe call.
Keeping a cleared downspout flowing
The best prevention is an empty gutter. Keep to a fall and spring cleaning schedule if trees hang over the roof, and glance at each downspout in the first hard rain of the season. On a tall house, leave the outlet check to us with two-story gutter cleaning rather than climbing to it.

If you want to try this yourself first, our guide to finding and clearing a clogged downspout walks through it. We cover Hampstead and nearby towns, including Raymond, Fremont and Kingston, where low lots make it worth knowing where the water lands.

Downspout Cleaning: common questions
How can I tell a downspout is clogged?
Watch it in steady rain. If little or nothing comes out the bottom while the gutter spills near the outlet, it is clogged. Other signs are water leaking at an elbow joint and wet soil at only one corner of the house. We confirm it by running a hose into the outlet and following where the water stops.
Can frozen downspouts be cleared in winter?
Sometimes, and it depends on how much ice is in there and how long the cold will last. Do not hammer on the metal or pour boiling water down it. A downspout frozen solid may have a cause worth fixing, such as a clog from fall. Call and we will set the earliest visit we can, or tell you if a thaw is the better plan.
What if an underground drain is the blockage?
Then the fix may be below ground, and that is a separate job. We clear the downspout down to the drain inlet and check whether water backs up there. If the buried line itself is blocked, call and ask, because scope depends on the property. Any digging needs Dig Safe first.
Should downspout cleaning be done at the same time as the gutters?
Yes, whenever you can. Debris in the gutter is what ends up in the downspout, so clearing only one of them invites a repeat clog. Our regular cleaning visit includes a flush of each downspout. Book a downspout-only visit when the gutters are clean and one outlet is still backing up.
Do downspout strainers stop clogs?
They help in some spots and cause trouble in others. A strainer keeps big leaves out of the outlet, but it collects them at the top, where they can dam the gutter if nobody clears them. Under heavy trees that can happen fast. We would look at your debris before suggesting one.
