Gutter Service in Exeter, NH

Exeter is about 18 miles from our Hampstead base, roughly 25 minutes by our estimate, and it is one of the closer Seacoast towns we cover. The historic core around Phillips Exeter Academy and the American Independence Museum sits on the Squamscott River, and there the gutter's color and profile matter as much as whether it drains. Newer subdivisions on the edges are a different job.

Exeter's gutter jobs fall into two groups, and they ask different questions. In the historic core, the question is how the gutter looks next to the house. Out on the edges of town, it is the usual one: will it handle the water.

Color and profile in the historic core

The center of Exeter sits along the Squamscott River, with Phillips Exeter Academy on one side and the American Independence Museum in the Ladd-Gilman House, built about 1721, nearby. Houses around this core are older and often painted in dark or traditional colors. A bright white gutter against black trim stands out.

We install seamless gutters in white, black and other colors, with downspouts to match, and our page on color-matched gutters covers how to choose. Decide the color before the price, not after.

Check with the town if you are inside the district

Exeter has a Historic District Commission, and it reviews exterior work for properties within the district under Article 8 of the zoning ordinance. Applications go through the Building Department. Whether gutters count as a change for your house is a question for the town, not for us. Once you know, we quote to what the commission accepts.

Beyond downtown: 1979 and later

The median Exeter home was built in 1979, and 69% are owner-occupied (ACS 2020-24). That puts a lot of houses past forty years, with gutter systems at the end of their run. These are the services that come up on those houses:

Where the Exeter River turns tidal

Downtown is where the Exeter River becomes the tidal Squamscott. The Great Dam there came out in 2016, and NOAA Fisheries reports that flooding from coastal storms has since dropped across almost 1,000 acres. That is an agency finding, not a flood study of your street.

Roof water is a small share of any flood, but streets near the river sit on low ground that drains slowly. A downspout that dumps beside the foundation has little chance of soaking away there. We check the slope and where the discharge can go before we suggest more gutter.

Near the Squamscott

Homes closer to the river sit on ground that slopes toward it, so the way a downspout discharges decides whether water heads toward the foundation or away from it. A short extension is often the cheapest fix. This is especially true on lots that fall away from the house in the wrong direction.

Permits and the Front Street offices

Exeter Building and Planning is at 10 Front Street, second floor, and the town requires building permits for residential and commercial construction. We could not confirm whether replacing gutters alone needs one, so ask before work starts. Inside the historic district, owners apply for commission review before changing the design, materials or color of exterior features. Bring us the answer and we quote to it. Call Dig Safe before trenching for a buried line.

How a visit works

We are roughly 25 minutes away, so Exeter does not need a special trip. We walk the roofline, measure the runs, check the fascia and hangers, and write the price down. Newfields and Stratham are next door, and Kensington is a short drive away. All sit in Rockingham County.

What customers say

“He called me on Tuesday to tell me that there is rain expected and he would like to move the job up to Wednesday (today). I thought that was very professional of him to reach out and reschedule.”

Gutter questions from Exeter

Do I need Historic District Commission approval for new gutters in Exeter?

It depends on whether your house is inside the district. Exeter's commission reviews exterior changes there, and applications go through the town's Building Department. Ask them before you order, then tell us the answer. We can quote to a color or profile the commission has accepted and put the price in writing.

Can Exeter gutters be painted to match older trim?

Yes. We install black and colored seamless gutters, and a color near your fascia and trim usually looks right on an older house. Bring a trim sample or the paint name you used. Color is worth settling before the quote, since it changes how the gutter reads against clapboard.

How soon can you get to Exeter from Hampstead?

Exeter is about 18 miles and roughly 25 minutes by our estimate, so it is one of our closer Seacoast towns. We will set the earliest visit we can once we hear what you are seeing. Small repairs fit easily around other work nearby.
